Tooth Extractions

Dental issues like severe decay, gum disease, overcrowding, impacted wisdom teeth, or preparing for braces can make a tooth extraction necessary. At Peerzada Smiles, our dentists employ advanced techniques and use local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free and precise extraction process.

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure where we remove a tooth from its socket in the jawbone and gum tissue. The process is typically done under local anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable throughout.

Different Types of Tooth Extractions

There are two primary types of tooth extractions:

Simple Extractions

They are performed on teeth that are visible and easily accessible. Your dentist will use special instruments to loosen the tooth and then extract it.

Surgical Extractions

When a tooth is impacted (trapped beneath the gumline), broken, or not visible, you will need a surgical extraction. During this procedure, we make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth.

Why Would You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Several reasons might lead to the need for a tooth extraction:

  • Severe Tooth Decay: A tooth is decayed and cannot be saved with a filling or a crown.
  • Advanced Gum Disease: In some cases, gum disease can lead to the loosening of teeth, making extraction necessary to prevent further infection.
  • Overcrowding: If your mouth is overcrowded with teeth, we will need to remove one or more to create space for proper alignment.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth, or third molars, often become impacted due to lack of space in the jaw, causing pain and potential dental issues.
  • Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment: Sometimes, teeth need to be extracted to make room for orthodontic procedures like braces.

Does Getting a Tooth Extraction Hurt?

During the procedure, you should not feel any pain as the area is numbed with local anesthesia. Afterward, you may experience some discomfort or mild pain, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications prescribed by your dentist.
